RAILWAY MOLSHEIM - SAVERNE

RAILWAY MOLSHEIM - SAVERNE

Railway Molsheim - Saverne - Molsheim >> Romanswiller

To have an idea of the trail, take a quick tour of the miniature garden train (scale 1/20) inspired by the former Molsheim-Saverne railway set up on a surface area of 30m x 8m in the courtyard of Molsheim hospital. The shady green trail runs in a virtually straight line and takes you firstly from Molsheim to Marlenheim, the northern gateway to the Alsace wine route, bordered by hilly vineyards on either side. Beyond this peaceful wine-growing town, the trail runs through Kronthal gorge towards Romanswiller. Its steep cliffs provided stone to build Strasbourg Cathedral and today, is very popular with climbers. As you come out of the gorge, you enter the charming little town of Wasselonne which harbours extensive remains of the former castle with its imposing square tower in the town centre. The trail ends at the foot of the former station of Romanswiller. 34 of the 48 km of tracks were laid down in 1862. In 1877, Molsheim was linked to Saverne and a 2-track line was built in 1932. It was decided to close the line to passengers in 1969, and then to goods trains in 1988.
