ST NICOLAS'CHURCH
ST NICOLAS'CHURCH
St Nicolas'Church - Haguenau
The square base of the bell tower is the only remnant of the Romanesque church built by the Hohenstaufen. Unlike most churches, this one is not designed in the shape of a cross. It was constructed on the foundations of a hospice by Frederick Barbarossa when he left on crusade. The tower survived and was incorporated into the Gothic church in around 1300. The church was enlarged in 1424 and the Neo-Gothic sacristy was built in 1846. During the French Revolution, the parish purchased furniture from the monastery of Neubourg: organs, pulpit, stalls and statues of the Fathers of the Church. It is a remarkable collection which clearly shows the transition between the tormented style of the Baroque and the straight lines of the Louis XVI style. The tower was severely damaged during the war and the bell was destroyed. The restoration of the church from 1965 revealed the beautiful pure lines of the Gothic structure. The windows are by Arthur Schouler.
