BL551 - DISCOVERING THE FORT BELT ALONG THE WATERWAYS

The former military forts surrounding the City of Strasbourg are a reminder of the region’s often troubled past. Some are open to visitors, like the fascinating Rapp Fort and Frère Fort. Admire the wonderful view from Hausbergen Hill providing a panorama of the Strasbourg Eurometropolis and its imposing Notre-Dame Cathedral. This itinerary takes you on a discovery tour of the military edifices that surrounded and protected the City of Strasbourg. Combining nature and history, the trail leads you through a kaleidoscope of landscapes. You can also enjoy the cool setting of the Bruche Canal, the Marne-Rhine Canal and the River Ill! Leave Place de l’Etoile and go towards Montagne Verte, then cross Heyritz Garden. Follow the “Montagne Verte” sign then Eckbolsheim and Wolfisheim along the Bruche Canal. You meet up with the Fort Trail in Wolfisheim, just after the bridge in Rue des Moulins. Follow the Fort Trail for 15 km until you reach the Marne-Rhine Canal and continue for a further 6 km to the European Court of Human Rights. Take the Pont de la Rose Blanche bridge and turn right immediately to cycle along the bank opposite the Parliament. Continue to the Ducrot passageway and cross over the River Ill. Turn right into Quai Mullenheim and then left into Rue Lauth and continue to Place de Bordeaux. Take Avenue de la Paix to Place de la République. Follow the “Gare SNCF” sign and then “La Petite France”. Cross La Petite France via the “Ponts Couverts”. Just after this bridge, turn right. Opposite the Conseil Départemental (local council) building, take the path that runs along the river bank. You arrive at the Grand Mosque. Cycle back to Place de l’Etoile.
