RAILWAY HAGUENAU - SAVERNE

RAILWAY HAGUENAU - SAVERNE

Before continuing your ride to the west, Bouxwiller, capital of Pays de Hanau, offers you an interesting detour through its old, remarkably well-preserved centre hemmed in by mediaeval fortifications. And don't miss out on its museums: the Alsatian Museum of Judaism and the Museum of the Pays de Hanau in the former castle chapel and the former granary. Via the green trail built up on the in-fill of the former railway line, the route takes you on a discovery tour of the agricultural villages in Pays de Hanau. Hills, forests and wheat fields paint the landscape. The trail runs past the remarkable churches of Neuwiller-les-Saverne, Saint-Pierre-et-Paul abbey church and Saint-Adelphe collegiate church before arriving at Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel at the end of the trail, where a curious fortified refuge stands by the church. The railway line from Saverne to Bouxwiller was laid down in 1877 and then extended to Haguenau in 1881. The line was closed to passengers in 1970 and then to goods trains in 1989. The railway line was then converted into a cycle path.
