RAILWAY LAUTERBOURG - WISSEMBOURG

RAILWAY LAUTERBOURG - WISSEMBOURG

Spanning from one fortified town to another, the 20-km long Lauterbourg-Wissembourg railway line was inaugurated in June 1900. When it was opened, it ran a daily service of 6 return trips and the journey lasted 40 minutes. In 1947, the line was closed to passengers and the Scheibenhard to Wissembourg section remained open for goods trains until 1958, principally transporting starch and oil (horsehead pumps still bear witness to this activity). The track was largely converted into a cycle trail and became part of the Franco-German cycle route of the Lauter Valley (Lautertal Radweg) in 1993. About one fifth of the trail runs alongside the village of Schleithal, the longest road-village in Alsace.
