SURRÉALICE: LEWIS CARROLL AND THE SURREALISTS
SURRÉALICE: LEWIS CARROLL AND THE SURREALISTS
SurréAlice: Lewis Carroll and the Surrealists - Strasbourg
This exhibition presents over 200 artworks, books and documents made by about thirty European artists and authors from the 1920s to the early 1970s. Through wonderlands, dreams and mirrors, the works raise questions about the transformation of the body, complicity between the world of animals and the world of humans and the notion of passage, as well as word play, card games and chess. The works also present figures of Alice as she has been perceived by women artists, thereby expanding the scope to include female representation in surrealist art. The original and surprising exhibition design includes specimens from the Zoological Museum, embodying the imaginary creatures of Lewis Carroll and of the surrealists. The first part of the exhibition–equally amazing–was entrusted to the artist Monster Chetwynd. Exhibition deemed of national interest by the French Ministry of Culture.
