HUYSMANS'S EYE: MANET, DEGAS, MOREAU
HUYSMANS'S EYE: MANET, DEGAS, MOREAU
Huysmans's eye: Manet, Degas, Moreau - Strasbourg
This exhibition devoted to Joris-Karl Huysmans, the 19th-century writer, art critic and fervent defender of Impressionist modernity, then of the Symbolists and Primitivists, is the fruit of an exceptional partnership with the Musée d’Orsay. There are 270 works - paintings, drawings, prints and objects – in the display, as well as manuscripts from the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal library, among them some of the finest Impressionist and Symbolist works held by the Musée d’Orsay. They include, most notably, works by Caillebotte, Redon, Degas and Gustave Moreau, but also Manet and the strange Félicien Rops. Numerous works from some of Strasbourg's remarkable art, scientific and book collections complete the exhibition, offering other points of entry into Huysmans's vision, to grasp his "eye".
