EXHIBITION: MEDIEVAL MAPS AND CASTLES
EXHIBITION: MEDIEVAL MAPS AND CASTLES
Exhibition: Medieval Maps and Castles - Wintzenheim
Created by the Archives of Alsace, this exhibition brings to life the Alsace of the Hohenstaufen and Habsburgs, far removed from preconceived ideas about the Middle Ages. This was the great era of castles, with numerous constructions throughout the region. The Haut-Koenigsbourg, mentioned for the first time in 1147, and the Hohlandsbourg in 1279 were part of this momentum. It was also at this time that the construction of Strasbourg Cathedral was in full swing and that the Hortus deliciarum, a magnificent encyclopaedia written by a woman, was written.
In a dozen panels and numerous visuals, the exhibition presents this period of prosperity for Alsace. Models of castles, a 3D animated film made using three-dimensional analysis of the ruins and the reconstruction of the Tower of Babel according to Herrade de Landsberg reveal the secrets of its architecture, the trades and the men who built them.
The Hortus deliciarum, whose illustrations are reproduced in large format throughout the exhibition, is given pride of place.
