Local museum - Rouffach
The evolution of the City is revealed in the bailiff's residence. The visit to the Museum, set up in this magnificent building, is a good introduction to the visit of the town, the former capital of the Upper Rhine possessions of the princes of Rohan, bishops of Strasbourg. The first room is dedicated to the evolution of the town through the centuries, with plans, documents, photographs and sculptures showing the wealth of its heritage. The second room focuses on archaeology and history.
The collections comprise the finds from archaeological excavations in Rouffach and vicinity. The artifacts date from various periods: the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, the Roman era, the great migrations, the Merovingians under King Dagobert II, the Middle Ages with its religious establishments. The data provided by urban archaeology bring us close to the modern times.
