SCHOELCHER HOUSE

SCHOELCHER HOUSE

Schoelcher house - Fessenheim

History buffs interested in the preservation of their heritage have founded a Society called « History, Heritage and Schoelcher's Friends ». In 1980 they got the idea of setting up 'Schoelcher's house, the Hardt Museum'. Their objective is to relate the history of the Hardt region and of its famous children: Marc Schelcher-Schoelcher, born in Fessenheim and well-known Paris porcelain manufacturer (late 18th century and early 19th century) and his son Victor Schoelcher, the defender of Human Rights and author of the decree of April 27, 1848, abolishing slavery. Should the local communities wish it, this small farmhouse typical of Upper Rhine Hardt could soon become a genuine 'Hardt Museum' or 'Schoelcher Museum' as well as a showcase for overseas territories in the region (Eastern France, Baden-Würtenberg, Basler Land). Visitors would come from far away, either to think or simply onpilgrimage.
