Musée de Langensoultzbach 'Dieux, déesses et sanctuaires des Vosges du Nord' - Langensoultzbach

Under the Roman domination Langensoultzbach had its temple (fanum) dedicated to Mercury. Abandoned when the country was christianized, steles and other fragments from the sanctuary found a refuge in the local parish church. The recently renovated former Catholic chapel is a museum housing these steles, listed as Historical Monuments in 1979, as well as other carved stones unearthed in Langensoultzbach and until now part of the Strasbourg Archaeological Museum collections, among which: the base of a column depicting the horseman-god: a stele representing Juno, Hercules, Mercury and Minerva; a representation of Mars (Tribans), unique in Gaul; a bas-relief depicting Rosmerta, a Gallic fertility goddess invariably associated with Mercury; a representation of Vosegus, hunter and protector of the woodlands. The name 'Vosegus' was given to both the 'Vosges' mountains and the tutelary deity protecting the range. The funerary inscription of an officer in the Roman legion (late 2nd century); The model of a house in Gaul; the replica of part of Wasserwald, an archaeological site on the hills near Saverne, with the horseman-god column and the model of a gallo-roman temple. The photographs of deities found within the boundaries of the Natural Regional Park of the northern Vosges are displayed on the back wall. The numerous archaeological sites on the map indicate places of worship.
