Abbey Saint-Etienne - Marmoutier
One of the most remarkable monuments in Alsace. Romanesque facade (beginning of the 12th c.), nave and narthex (13th c.), Pietà (15th c.), pulpit in stone (1561); Silbermann organ (1710), rose-window (18th c.). Archeological crypt under the transept and the choir (entrance in the right transept), unique example of remains, showing the complete history of successive abbey-churches in Marmoutier dating back to the Merovingian, Carolingian and Ottonian eras.
Explanations and description displayed on boards. Exhibition of the excavated objects : sarcophagi (with a rare hollowed trunk)... Guided visits for groups all year by appointment. Duration : 1,30 hr.
