CHAPEL OF THE PAINFUL VIRGIN
CHAPEL OF THE PAINFUL VIRGIN
Chapel of the Painful Virgin - Gambsheim
The chapel dedicated to the Painful Virgin where Saint-Quirin is also venerated is the oldest building in the town. Its choir dates back to the middle of the 15th century. The lintel of the front door is engraved with the date 1658, which marks its restoration after the Thirty Years' War. During the Revolution, it was used as a stable and fodder store and was returned to worship after the Concordat. Its foundation is full of mystery and it is attributed a legend. It emerged unscathed from the last world war and served as a parish church from April to September 1945. The chapel contains a Pieta and beautiful stained glass windows installed by the OTT house in 1900.
