BL780 - Either side of the Rhine, from Breisach to Brisach

Distance 38,5 km
Difficulty Occasional practice
Elevation 81 m

This itinerary combines a rich historical heritage with the story of electrical energy generated by the Rhine - which is the overriding theme of the circuit. Starting from Fessenheim, the hometown of Victor Schœlcher who was a fervent antislavery campaigner and defender of human rights, you cycle through country lanes linking together the small villages located along the Rhine. The ride takes you close to Neuf-Brisach, commissioned by the Sun King and a masterpiece of Vauban, with its unique octagonal architecture, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You then cross the Rhine over a hydroelectric dam to explore Breisach where St. Étienne’s Romanesque Collegiate Church reveals its rich interior decor. Continuing along the German side of the Rhine, you return to your starting point via a second hydroelectric dam, where you can visit the nearby EDF Energy Museum.
